Not having a good day?

Starting the day today I realised it was one of those days when I make a conscious effort to be happy. Not that I'm depressed or very unhappy. No, far from it. It just looked like one of those 'meh days' right from the off. The sky is covered in clouds, I have nothing exciting on for today, apart from doing the grocery shopping and we all know how exciting that can get. [insert ironic smile here]

So, what do you do on a day like that? Well, I don't know. You tell me. Right after I tell you what I do on a day like this.

Starting as usual I have a mug of coffee in bed. While I check my emails. Yes. Right.

Then I prepare a good breakfast while Felix walks the dogs.

Then we have breakfast together when they get back. Well, Felix and I have it together, Jack wolves his down so fast he is usually finished by the time we sit down.

After breakfast we go back to bed for a bit.

(Note that so far this doesn't vary from our usual routine. Felix teaching in the evenings is insofar great as that we can often idle away the morning. It also means that he isn't home in the evenings which is less than great. But that's another story.)

At some stage I have to get dressed. Well, only if I don't want my elderly neighbour have me open the door on her in my pyjamas as it happened today, her commenting "oh, you're still in your morning attire, not to worry" to my apologetic face. After she was gone I realised it was 11.30am. Not quite morning anymore.

So when I get dressed on a meh day I try and make it either extra nice or extra comfortable. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, one coincides with the other. Not today. Today is comfortable: pale green combats, denim shirt and, as long as I'm inside the house, Crocs.

Meh days require special attention to looks, though. So a little treat with my favourite wake me up cream. Maybe some colour for my face? Not to forget a bit of perfume. Yes, definitely. I have several. All of them favourites of mine, or about to be lifted into that category. Perfumes usually last me ages because I normally forget to use them. Meh days make me remember the existence of those bottles on the dresser and shelf.

And while we're talking about smells. Certain smells always make me feel good. Like my mango body butter. Vanilla and coffee is also a brilliant combination. Drinking coffee with a little dash of vanilla sugar in it isn't bad either. Or a cup of this:

It's Rooibos tea with dried cornflower leaves and, this is the best bit, little white chocolate stars. No surprise it's called 'Lucky Star Tea'. My dear friend Gina brings it for me from Austria once a year. It's perfect for a meh day afternoon. After half an hour of yoga maybe?

And at the end of a meh day you can still brighten everything up with a nice dinner. Something that always makes me happy is pasta. Or risotto. Risotto is good. I love that it requires attention and some effort.

And then, you can always end your day with a bit of A Bit of Fry & Laurie. And wouldn't you know it, it didn't turn out to be such a meh day after all!

I liked all the ingredients of your not so brilliant day, especially the very young Stephen Fry.

I find your Rooibos tea intriguing and am trying to imagine what it tastes like. I know you're very fond of chocolate, so it must be a bit of heaven to you.

Several perfumes you say? What a lucky girl you are!

I think you dealt with your meh day just right - comfort, small pleasures, food, rest and a good DVD.

I really fancy a meh day now!

Nora, yes, Fry & Laurie never fails to make me laugh.
And yes, I do have several perfumes. They have to fit my mood, you see. Haven't found one yet that I like every single day.

Lane, it was actually a very pleasant day. What does your meh day look like?

I think my day would be pretty much like yours. I'd like to just potter and not have to watch the clock. Read, nap, long bath. Little luxuries.

Yep I need a meh day:-)

Is it true that tea in Ireland is just... a given? And you make REAL tea with loose leaves, not just the stuff in the bags?
I've been obsessed with tea over the past couple of years. I was given my grandmothers old tea pot and straner and I buy loose leaves (from the internet, as I can find it in stores here) and the whole shebang. Its so relaxing.
Can you recommend a good tea for me???

Ps if you are wondering why I'm bugging you so much all of a sudden, this is Emily from the old Musings of a Minnesota Girl. Just finally switched blogs. Lol!

Heyyy, Emily! It'll be a disappointment but I haven't yet met an Irish person who doesn't use tea bags. Sad, I know. I guess they're just so convenient.
At the moment I'm very much into herbal tea mixtures. I brought 2 different ones back from Switzerland (where my brother lives). One also has green tea added to the mix. But I still do need my coffee in the morning, no way around that!

(Now that you're here I've got to make an effort and blog more, see what you've done!)
